Vehicle Emission Control to mitigate the negative effects of vehicle emission into the environment and check its hazardous impacts on human health is to commence across Ogun State by 1st March, this year.
This is sequel to the approval of the operation by the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to the State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA).
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Hon. Farouk Akintunde made this known during a stakeholders meeting with the transportation industry, in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, confirming that the test would commence across the State by 1st March, 2025.
According to the Special Adviser, there would be designated centres within the State, where the emission test would be conducted for all types of vehicle to include Cars, Trucks, motorbikes, buses and Tricycles.
“This meeting is to inform you and ask for your cooperation for the success of the scheme, as efforts were in place for its commencement,” he said.
Contributing, the Commandant, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Commander Seni Ogunyemi, called on the transportation unions in the State to embrace the scheme which is for the good of all citizens of the State.
In his remarks, Ogun State Commander, Vehicle Inspection Office, Engr. Ademehin Olugboyega said that vehicles that fail the emission test would be referred to the Vehicle Inspection office (VIO) for further test and advise.
Speaking on behalf of other transportation unions in the State, Secretary of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Comrade Tiwalade Akingbade, declared their unalloyed support for the success of the scheme, while appealing to the government to support the transportation unions in converting to CNG enabled vehicles.
In a related development, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has sealed Arolat Petrol Station, along Ayetoro roundabout road in Abeokuta, pending the conclusion of investigation to ascertain the level of underground water pollution alleged to have been caused by its activities in the area
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), Hon. Farouk Akintunde, disclosed this in his Office, Oke-Mosan, saying that the action was taken to give room for thorough investigation over the petition received by Foursquare Gospel Church located beside the Petrol Station in Abeokuta.
Hon. Akintunde said the petition alleged that the activities of the Petrol Station had contaminated the only source of water supply of the Church, which is a well water with harmful Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) substances in the area.
The Special Adviser said based on the receipt of the petition, the enforcement team of the Agency, moved into action and sealed up the facility to carry out proper investigation so as to identify the level of the chemical contamination in all water ground in the area, extent of the contamination and to establish the present underground water status, towards ensuring the wellness and well-being of all residents of the area.
” As a responsive and responsible Government’s Agency, we have to be proactive, since the safety and over all wellbeing of our people are paramount and must not be compromised for any reason,” Akintunde Said.
