Guests listening attentively yesterday at the Security Cofab ’22 Stakeholders’ Dinner held at Park Inn, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Insecurity will continue to thrive and fester in the country as long as respective state governments lack the political muscle to punish criminals, a security expert, Prof. Kunle Olawunmi has said.
Speaking yesterday at the Stakeholders’ Dinner of the Gateway Secure Confab ’22 held at Park Inn by Raddison Blue, Kuto, Abeokuta, Prof Olawunmi opined that governments in the country lack enough political will to punish offenders adequately so as to serve as deterrents to other criminal minded citizens.
Prof. Olawunmi who was one of the speakers at the well-attended dinner which was hosted by the Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as part of the activities to kickstart the Gateway Secure Confab ’22, a security conference it is co-organising with the Ogun State Government lamented that security matters are not beer parlour issues to be discussed over the bottle.
He said that no matter how extensively we jaw-jaw or educate ourselves,  our security would continue to walk on stilt without a well-thought out plan that articulate actions and ideas.
Prof. Olawunmi pointed out that one of the things Ogun State Government needed was an unfettered communications system that allow the governor to monitor the whole state real time.
The security egghead noted that without real time communication system that include audio and video coverage of the state,  it may be difficult for the governor to monitor the entire state adequately.
In her own speech at the dinner, Dr. Rachael Awosusi, the Commandant of the Civil Defence College Of Security Management of the NSCDC said Ogun State needs to be proactive in its handling of its security issues pointing out that it is shocking to note that many perpetrators of crimes in the state are nderaged and oftentimes, even in primary schools.
She said what should agitate the minds of many is the question of where the state would be security wise in fifty years to come at the ongoing rate.
Dr. Rachael said the situation is so worse that nobody is no longer sacrosanct, everybody is vulnerable, even their teachers.
She noted that our children are now threats to our security as they are no longer interested in hard work, honest living and salary earnings since they make more money from criminalities like kidnapping and ritual killings.
The commandant therefore called for immediate coming together of security experts to rub minds and work out a way out of the mire.
Earlier in his own speech, Commander Kolawole Taiwo, the Commandant of Ogun State Command of NSCDC lauded the corps saying that they are defenders of the defenceless.
He noted that no country can develop without strategic defence of its critical sectors and these, He said included the railways, the pipelines and others.
He said the corps will for these reasons be collaborating with other sister security agencies in the country to bring security infractions to its barest minimum.
Also speakingat the occasion,  Mr. Adebayo Adelaja, one of the coordinators of the confab said the three day conference  which will commence by Tuesday, 24th of May, 2022 and will end by Thursday, 26th instant.
He noted that The conference which is jointly hosted by NSCDC and the State Government and themed “Security: A Collective Responsibility”, will be attended by various security experts who will work out ways for the myriads of challenges confronting the state’s security infrastructures.
