Despite the release of Aminu Mohammed Adamu, the final-year student of the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa, allegedly ordered to be arrested and detained by the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, all may not yet be over as the body of Nigerian students is insisting that the matter should not be allowed to be swept under the carpet just like that.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is now not only demanding that Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari, should tender a public apology for the illegal arrest and detention of Aminu Mohammed Adamu, but that the apology should even be carried in four Nigerian newspapers.
The association is also asking for monetary compensation for Adamu and his family for the inhumane condition the first lady allegedly meted out to them.
Adamu was arrested by security operatives days ago for accusing the First Lady of feeding on poor peoples’ money in a post via his Twitter handle.
After alleged assaults, the young man was arraigned before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty.
Aminu was, however, released on Friday after spending about two weeks in detention.
He was released after a public outcry against his detention, which forced the First Lady to withdraw the case against him.
After his release, Aminu was said to have met with President Muhammadu Buhari before he was reunited with his family, maybe to placate him over his alleged maltreatment.
But hours after his freedom, the students’ association in a statement, signed by the Ogun State Chairman of Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Comrade Kehinde Damilola Simeon, insisted that the First Lady must apologize to Aminu.
The student union said Madam Buhari abused her power by punishing the student in that manner.
NANS said the release and meeting with President Buhari were not enough, demanding that Adamu should be compensated with an apology letter.
The student union said: “We consider that the meeting of the President with Aminu after his release from detention is not enough.
“Madam Aisha Buhari should apologize publicly in at least four daily newspapers. Aminu and his family should be compensated for the inhumane condition the first family had thrown them into in the last few days.
These principles are what we consider as the fundamental basis for demanding the release of the unjustly victimized Nigerian student, Aminu Adamu, who had only said nothing but the truth which is visible to all”.
