    Okowa and Obasanjo

By Foluso Adelaja
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo again displayed his quintessence quirkiness when he declared his political leaning recently, not minding whose horse is gored.

The former President again made no pretence of his preference for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi for the forthcoming 2023 General Elections.
Even to the face of a guest, the vice presidential candidate of the PDP, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who had paid him a courtesy call in his private residence in Abeokuta.

        The entourage with Obasanjo

Okowa had come calling on Chief Obasanjo to solicit his support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his presidential candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, who he (Okowa) is his presidential candidate.

But to the chagrin of the vice presidential candidate of the PDP, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, was seriously tongue lashed by Obasanjo for not only giving his support to former Vice President Abubakar Atiku but also for daring to ask for his support for his former vice president.

Okowa was said to have visited Obasanjo alongside Governor Tambuwal, former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola to seek his support for the presidential ambition of Atiku.

A credible source, with knowledge of what transpired at the meeting, told a Nigerian news medium on Sunday that former President Obasanjo gave Governor Okowa the full length of his tongue, accusing him of betrayal.

The source, a former Ambassador, disclosed that “Baba did not hide his feelings. He was very straight with Okowa”.

He accused him of betraying the patriotic resolve to have the 2023 presidency come to the south which the Delta governor and other southern governors championed before the primaries.

“Most of people who made up the team are people who Baba sees as not sincere especially Governor Okowa and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who betrayed Obasanjo and PDP in 2011 by upturning an earlier arrangement for Honourable Mulikat Akande-Adeola to become the Speaker of the Representatives.

“Everyone knows Baba is supporting Peter Obi and he did not hide it from them.

But it was a very good opportunity to remind Okowa and Tambuwal who they are in terms of trust and commitment to a better Nigeria,” the Ambassador disclosed.
