The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun has, approved not less than Twenty Four Billion Naira (N24,000,000,000) as the State’s Basic Education Commission (UBEC)/State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) counterpart funding from the year 2022 to 2026 to further enhance infrastructural developments in Public Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as Government Technical Colleges across the State.

Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, made this known in Abeokuta during the Pre-Resumption Stakeholders’ Meeting For 2026/2027 Academic Session with Old Student Associations and Parents Forum.

Recalled that Governor Abiodun had earlier paid five years of inherited funding from 2014 to 2018 and had just balanced up for his administration from 2019 to 2026.

Prof. Arigbabu, mentioned that the Prince Abiodun’s administration had also catered for the well-being of teachers and all the workforce in the State by clearing the backlog of promotion exercises from 2014 to 2024 and has given approval for the 2025 and 2026 exercises, appreciating the old students for giving back to their alma mater without expecting anything in return.

The Commissioner solicited further for enhanced partnership and support of the old students, parents forum and other well meaning individuals in the society to collaborate with the government towards continuous provision of infrastructural amenities to sustain the worthy educational standards of the founding fathers, submitting that government alone could not shoulder the burden of education.

According to him, “because the people of Ogun State are highly educated, it becomes a major parameter for the overall assessment of any government in the State, hence the present administration has made efforts not only to maintain the best position in terms of productive learning, but to provide academic experience to the students,’’Arigbabu said.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, noted that the responsibility of education could be shouldered by government alone, hence the engagement with stakeholders to brainstorm on what to put in place to ensure successful new academic calendar, affirming that the meeting had yielded desired results over the years.

Speaking, the State Chairman, Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Comrade Tajudeen Adeosun, the Headteacher-General, Egba Division, Mrs Folake Onabanjo and the National Vice Chairman, Parents Forum, Rev. Folorunso, described the event as laudable initiative, noting that because success in education required strong partnership between the government, parents, old students and teachers, therefore collective efforts should be made to further enhance development in the education sector at all levels.

The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of Excellent Leadership Award to the Commissioner and Outstanding Achiever Award for the Permanent Secretary.
