Harry Kane celebrates after England’s win against Mexico
Almost all schools around England allowed pupils to come late yesterday, Monday so they can watch the England World Cup knockout match in the early hours.
Even Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister announced that pubs will stay open until 5am for England’s clash with Mexico.
The Three Lions took on co-hosts Mexico at 1am BST on Monday (6pm local time on Sunday) at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
Following England’s last-minute victory against DR Congo on Wednesday, head coach Thomas Tuchel said: “Write an excuse for school and let them watch. There’s so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years. Let them watch.”
In previous World Cup tournaments, schools have paused lessons to allow children to watch matches in the knockout stages.

A number of schools around the country allowed pupils to arrive a couple of hours late on Monday. However, the move has not been welcomed by some officials.
However, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said pupils should still arrive at school on time despite the 1am kick-off.
She told BBC Newsnight: “I’m not going to make requests on parents around bedtime…But please let’s try and get our kids in on Monday too.”
A Downing Street spokesperson said: “Parents will make their own decisions… We want everyone to enjoy the game, but children should be in school on Monday.”
Schools within the same multi-academy trust in County Durham – Greenland, Bloemfontein and Burnhope – allowed pupils to arrive any time before 10am on Monday and did not be marked them late.
Purwell Primary School in Hitchin, Hertfordshire allowed pupils to arrive any time before 10.30am.
England won the game in a stunning 3-2 victory.
Meanwhile, the US President, Donald Trump calls Harry Kane a ‘great player’ after England’s 3-2 victory against Mexico.
Trump took a break from his celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States to gush over Harry Kane online, calling the England captain a “great player”
The US President took to Truth Social to gush over England’s captain after the Three Lions made history by beating Mexico at the Azteca.
Kane scored England’s third goal of the match last night, after Anthony Gordon won a penalty.
It came minutes after the pressure was put on England as defender Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR check over a high tackle.
Fans back home stayed up late to watch the match, the Azteca was filled with England supporters and Trump appeared to be among the people watching the Three Lions’ historic win.
Trump, 80, took to his social media site Truth Social and posted: “Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!” Kane’s brilliance on the pitch was a break for Trump who spent most of his weekend posting about the 250th anniversary of the USA.
