…as House resolves conflict between duo
The long standing conflict between the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers and Truck Owners Association of Nigeria on whether the former has the right to collect money from the latter by way of tickets at mining and quarry site has now been resolved amicably between the duo.
It was resolved recently by the Ogun State House of Assembly (OGHA) in favour of the Nigerian Mine Workers.
The House of Assembly explained that since the jurisdiction of the Nigerian Mine Workers falls within the quarry, they have the moral justification to issue tickets to the purchaser of their products and that the purchaser or owner of the granite will incur the ticket fee.
The matter which was resolved and made into a resolution of the House also addressed other issues causing conflict between the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers and Truck Owners Association of Nigeria,
The resolution also affirmed that the truck owners could organise other relevant stakeholders in the granite carriage business and also at liberty to levy all trucks loading granites from all quarries across the state, for the same amount as the Nigerian Mine Workers in the interest of the associations.
The passage of the resolution followed the presentation of the report of the joint House Committees on Industry, Trade and Investments, as well as Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions, in respect of the rift between the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers and Truck Owners Association of Nigeria, over revenue collection.
The matter was presented by Hon. Adebisi Oyedele, who thereafter moved for its adoption and was seconded by Hon. Oluseun Adesanya and supported by the Whole House.
Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, later moved the motion converting the Committees’ recommendations into the House resolution, which was also seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye and supported by the Whole House, through a unanimous voice vote.
The report partly read, “the joint Committee on Industry, Trade and Investments, as well as, Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions, met five times to resolve issues that have been bordering on revenue collection in the mining sector of the state, which is causing disharmony between the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers, Ogun State Chapter and Truck Owners Association of Nigeria”.
The report further stated that, “the Committees painstakingly listened to the submissions and prayers of the two parties and the documents tendered to support their claims.
The Committee advised the two parties to meet, synergise and come up with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The parties consented to the advice of the Committee and promised to forward their resolution to the Committee.
