The threat of Fulani herdsmen in Opeji, one of the principal towns of Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State is now a stark reality as their invasion of the town and their characteristic menaces are now sources of great bother to its people.
Speaking with THE STATEPOST in Abeokuta yesterday, the affrighted traditional leader of the town, Baale Rasaki Adesina made a passionate plea to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun and security apparatus in the state to immediately come to the rescue of his people.
He said that the issue of Fulani herdsmen has now degenerated into an irksome plague to the people of Opeji and its surrounding villages adding that the traditional leaders in the area are even now planning to meet in the week to brainstorm on all possible solutions to the problem.
Baale Adesina disclosed that the people have also decided to send a powerful message through their leader to the Alake of Egbaland and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, to beg him not to ignore them in their plight.
The Baale lamented that the Fulani herdsmen displaced in Ibarapa towns of Oyo State because of their misdeeds have now found their ways into Opeji town and are already wreaking Havocs by wilfully damaging properties and refusing to be controlled.
The alarmed traditional leader said the population of the Fulani herdsmen keep growing by the day as they now outnumber the indigenes of the town.
Baale Adesina noted that though the problem of Fulani herdsmen has been plaguing Opeji for a long time, it has never reach the present alarming crescendo.
He vehemently begged the state government to do something urgently as the dimension the issue is now taking will soon be beyond the control of everybody.
Chief Adesina noted that these herdsmen trooped into the town through clandestine bush paths in the dead of the night and with their cows destroying everything on their trails.
