Dr. Rafiu Adekola Soyele, Provost, Federal

                                                     College Of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta

The Provost Of the Federal College Of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, Dr. Rafiu Adekola Soyele has identified poverty as one of the factors causing social vices in the society.
Speaking on the occasion of Security Sensitization Program organized by the National Orientation Agency  (NOA) for the college and held at the Primary Education Lecture Hall yesterday, Dr. Soyele posited that poverty, among other factors constituted the bedrocks on which social vices are nurtured and got transferred to campuses of tertiary institutions in the country.
He affirmed  that “social vices are deviant behaviours caused by complex interaction of psychological, sociological, economical and biological forces that encourage individuals to rebel against social norms, or better still act in ways contrary to societal expectations and values”.
Enumerating other factors that are causing vices as economic recession, unemployment, lack of parental care, broken home, influences, impatience, laziness and greed among others, Dr. Soyele noted that these vices breed cultism, robbery, ritual killings, kidnapping, rapes, pre-marital sexual relationships, alcoholism and myriads other social vices.
He pointed out that “what is sad enough is that the nefarious behaviours have reared their ugly heads even in primary and secondary school compounds”.’
Dr. Soyele noted that the effects of these vices which have eaten deep into the fabrics of our society and the nation’s campuses include poor academic performance, misorientation of the physical, academic and moral goals and oftentimes, contact with deadly diseases which may eventually lead to termination of lives and career.
The academician also noted that those in secret cults are also exposed to various forms of illegal acts which included smoking, alcoholism, rape, taking illegal substances, hooliganism, thuggery among others.
In his suggestions of panacea towards eradicating social vices on campus, the provost called for more grants, awards and student allowances as well as parental care and visitations.
He also called for adequate security services on campus and the provision of social amenities and adequate infrastructures for students.
Dr. Soyele expressed gratitude to Mr. Christopher Kolawole Obadina, the Director of the National Orientation Agency, Ogun State for choosing the college for its sensitization program.
The provost said the programe will further help to educate the students on the different shades of social vices in the society and thereby help curtail the rising trends among youths in and around our campuses.
He also noted that the effect of the sensitization programme will prepare our youth for future challenges to take up the leadership of the country and make Nigeria a better place to live.
Mr. Obadina who also spoke at the occasion enjoined students to shun vices, face their studies and become useful to their families and the society at large.
He impressed it on the students that the disadvantages inherent in social vices far outweigh the advantages and it negatively impart on those indulging in it.
