Eminent economist, distinguished academic and Life President of Abeokuta Club, Professor Afolabi Soyode, will on Friday, June 26, be celebrated by family, friends, associates and admirers as he marks his 85th birthday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The milestone celebration will also feature the public presentation and launch of his latest book, titled “Abeokuta Club: The Making of a Life President,” a publication that chronicles the history, values and contributions of the prestigious Abeokuta Club to the development of Egbaland and Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by the organisers, the event is expected to attract an array of eminent Nigerians drawn from the political, traditional, academic, business and diplomatic communities.
Among the prominent personalities expected at the occasion is former President Olusegun Obasanjo, alongside members of the National Assembly, serving and former governors, distinguished senators, captains of industry and respected academics.
Traditional rulers from across Ogun State and beyond are also expected to grace the event in honour of the elder statesman and accomplished scholar.
Leading the royal fathers billed to attend is the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, who is expected to be joined by several eminent monarchs from different parts of the country.
The organisers described the gathering as a celebration of an exceptional Nigerian whose contributions have transcended the fields of economics, education, public policy and community development.
Born on June 26, 1941, in Abeokuta, Professor Soyode has built an illustrious career spanning academia, banking, management consultancy and public service.
Over the decades, he has earned recognition as a respected economist, public intellectual and administrator whose ideas and professional engagements have contributed significantly to economic thought and policy formulation in Nigeria.
His career has also been marked by notable contributions to corporate governance, industrial development and strategic management, making him one of the country’s most respected voices in economic and developmental discourse.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Soyode has remained actively involved in community service, philanthropy and mentorship, impacting generations of professionals, scholars and community leaders.
The statement noted that his leadership of Abeokuta Club has further strengthened the institution’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost social and intellectual associations.
It added that the birthday celebration is designed not only to honour Professor Soyode’s achievements but also to inspire younger generations through his enduring example of discipline, scholarship, integrity and patriotism.
