Members of the Sacred Heart School of Midwifery and Nursing Alumni (SHSOMAN) recently organized a comprehensive medical outreach aimed at giving back to their alma mater and its surrounding host communities.
The event, held at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Lantoro, Abeokuta, saw a significant turnout, as residents gathered to access essential healthcare services at no cost.
In her keynote address, the Global President of the Alumni, Nurse Taiwo Harrison-Akinboboye, emphasized that the initiative reflects a deep commitment to supporting their former institution and improving the wellbeing of residents.
“This project signifies the beginning of new possibilities,” she stated. “Our vision is for initiatives like this to grow and evolve. We look forward to a future where professionals and volunteers from Nigeria and the diaspora unite to enhance healthcare services ranging from screenings and treatments to surgical interventions for those in need.”
Alumni stakeholders further noted that the mission was specifically designed to promote the primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases within the community, catching potential health issues before they become life-threatening.
In his remark, the Bishop and Head of Sacred Heart Hospital, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo, represented by Sister Josephine Enenmo, commended the alumni for the initiative. He noted that the outreach was the first of its kind for the school, describing it as a major milestone in promoting community health.
The outreach provided a wide range of services to the large crowd in attendance, including free medical consultations, basic laboratory tests, blood pressure screening, distribution of drugs, and health education, drawing a large turnout of beneficiaries who accessed quality healthcare services at no cost.
Beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the group, describing the gesture as both timely and impactful, especially for those who previously lacked access to quality healthcare.
