NIMC staffers on the campaign trail.
The Ogun State Coordinator of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr Olusola Shotayo led the staff and other interested participants on a road walk to mark this year’s celebration of the National Day of Identity in Nigeria with fanfare.
During the campaign, celebrated on the 16th day of September (16:9) as usual, Shotayo sensitised members of the public on some of the obligations of a new e-card in the pipeline.
He said these would include financial transactions, voting, international travels, health insurance among others.
He said the General Multipurpose card will also put paid to government’s incessant dilemmas on how to reach appropriate portions of the citizenry with palliatives or other dividends as it now has the inclusion of government Social Safety Net.
Shotayo noted that age barriers no longer exist for the issuance of the national identification number as all Nigerians and non Nigerians particularly the Legal Residents staying in the country for over six month has to be registered for easy monitoring.
As early as 7:30 on Tuesday morning, workers of NIMC gathered at the popular Iyana Mortuary Junction of Abeokuta Business District, despite early morning downpour, all cladded in branded shirts boldly inscripted: “National Identity Day (16:9)”
The Ogun State Coordinator of the commission, Mr Olusola Shotayo who led the campaign said the team was out on a road walk sensitisation in celebration of 2025 National Day of Identity in Nigeria.
This year’s celebration of the National Identity Day which had as  its theme: “Public Key Infrastructure: Backbone To Digital Public Infrastructure” was the subject of the streets campaign from Iyana mortuary junction to Ijaye, Sapon and Itoku markets.
Stop overs were observed at strategic areas with fanfare as the commission’s staffers and other participators paraded the streets of the state capital in a motorcade while many danced along on foot distributing handbils.
The content of the handbills emphasized the steps needed for the process of accessing the self-service portal of NIMC for updating NIN data.
The other page of the handbill introduced a secure verification and authentication platform codenamed “NINAuth” as innovations in the services of the commission.
Part of the take home of the sensitisation was the condemnation of the rampant patronage of the public for fake NIMC card in circulation while emphasising that the commission is building a credible and reliable  National Identity Management System (NIMS) that is digital based  and not card based.
After the road walk, staff of the commission and other stakeholders in the national identity ecosystem including members of the public later congregated at the State office complex in Oke-Mosan for interactions between the NIMC state authorities and the public with talks around the theme of the year 2025 celebration and thereafter  a cake was cut to mark the Day amidst other merriments lined up for the momentous occassion.
