At least once in our lives, we all have (or at some point, we will have) experienced an awkward sexual encounter. Talking during sex is not something that’s unheard of, we all do it even within the paper thin walls of our downtown apartments and it’s a pretty normal thing. But, depending on how you’re talking and what you’re talking about is what can turn sex from something really hot into something just. . . not.

First things first, I can guarantee you that whoever you’re having sex with does NOT want to engage in a regular day to day conversation while you’re getting it in. Talking to someone about what you ate for lunch at the HUB that day is not hot, whatsoever, and no one wants to hear about it while they’re trying to concentrate on other, more important things.

So we went around and asked if students thought it was OK to talk during sex.

“It depends.. some people might not be up to it, but if you’re okay with it then I think it’s okay. If it’s your thing, then go for it.. but some people might think it’s awkward.”

Male, 18, Music Educatio

I hate dirty talk, I think it’s stupid and awkward, but I like just having a normal conversation.. as long as you’re comfortable with each other, it shouldn’t be weird. Joking around and laughing are also definitely allowed.”

Male, 18, Political Science: Being quiet during sex is kind of fucking awkward so I think talking is better than nothing. Just don’t talk about weird shit.”

Female, 19, Criminology

“Talking about conflict during  sex would probably be the weirdest thing… you’re supposed to be having fun and talking about something serious would just be a mood killer.”

Dirty talking is probably the most acceptable and common type of sex talk. It’s a pretty good thing, and science has proven that it actually excites the brain and enhances the experience. By dirty, I don’t mean “yeah I haven’t taken a shower in like, 3 days..” cause that’ll ruin it altogether. If you’re comfortable with whoever you’re having sex with, it should be easy to get a few good dirty words and phrases in there to make the sex that much better.

Saying something every once in a while is much better than just sitting in silence, and you can use it as a way to cover up the weird noises you’re probably making. Just be sure to think before you blurt out something that makes the other person uncomfortable and end up never wanting to call you again. Probably one of the worst things that could happen is mistakenly calling out someone else’s name while you’re having sex- you’ll never let yourself live it down.

Surprisingly enough, some girls really don’t like being called “slut” and “dirty bitch” in bed (if you thought they did, you’re probably watching too much porn). Try not to say anything too harsh to your partner, or you’ll probably make it awkward and ruin it.. this isn’t 50 Shades of Grey.

Finally, I took to Twitter to see how people felt about talking during sex. Unsurprisingly a lot of people seem to think it’s okay. So, if you’re someone that’s really social and likes to talk dirty during sex, you’re in luck- no one thinks you’re a creep. Just make sure you keep the conversation strictly dick-ly.
