Coca-Cola has recalled thousands of cans across hundreds of multi packs amid concerns that a ‘foreign object’ may be found inside that could cause harm if ingested by a customer.
A recall has been issued and more than 10,000 cans of Coca-Cola have already been recalled following concerns a “foreign object” could be found inside.
Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC, recalled more than 10,000 cans of 12 packs of 12oz Coca-Cola Original Taste on Match 6 following the discovery of plastic inside.
It was classified as a Class II recall by the US Food and Drug Administration.
A Class II represents a moderate to high risk, according to the FDA website.
The affected packs have the date code of “SEP2925MDA” and include the time stamps between 11:00 and 12:53. All cans have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 49000-00634 6 and a 12-pack UPC of 0 49000-02890 4.
The cans were produced by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling LLC, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The FDA designated it as a Class II recall in a March 24 report. There are an estimated 864 packs that are included in the recall, as reported by Newsweek. The recall is for cans in the US states of Illinois and Wisconsin.
The FDA said “hard or sharp foreign objects” such as those targeted by the recall could cause injuries and cuts inside the mouth, including the tongue, throat as well as to the stomach, intestines, teeth and gums.
Dr Mark Fischer, a regional medical director at International SOS, previously told the outlet: “It can be dangerous to consume metals or other foreign objects found in food…[They] can cause cuts or internal injury and may need to be removed via a surgical procedure. If you swallow any foreign objects, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional.”

A spokesperson for the bottling company told ABC News on Tuesday it had carried out a voluntary recall. The spokesperson added: “The cases are being withdrawn because they did not meet our high-quality standards. We are taking this voluntary action because nothing is more important to us than providing high-quality products to the people who drink our beverages.”
The recall in the US follows one in the UK earlier this year that related to a small number of imported cans of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Spirit Zero as they may contain higher levels of chlorate. Other affected products include two imported batches of 6x250ml Appletiser multipacs. The company said in a previous recall the products could pose a risk to customers, in particular those who are sensitive to chlorate or live with an iodine deficiency.
This week a Coca-Cola spokesperson told The Mirror the UK recall originally made in January had been “resolved”.
