Leading the exercise, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr. Kafayat Lawal, said the demolition was carried out after several warning and abatement notices were served on the street traders to vacate the area as an alternative place had been provided for them on the Plaza Road, Sango.
Dr Lawal said “The exercise will free the Tollgate and Under bridge street trading which frequently leads to loss of life when there are mishaps around the area.”
According to her, the matter has become a source of worry to government and well-meaning Nigerians, hence the State Government’s resolve not to act promptly to rid the Tollgate area of street trading which had caused avoidable losses of lives and permanent disabilities due to the danger it poses.
Dr. Lawal therefore called on the traders to move to the new market provided for them by the state government in conjunction with the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government as well as Olota- in Council as any one who violates the new order would face the full wrath of the law.
